CASCADE LOCKS — Earlier this month, the Cascade Locks Tourism Committee put on a free vintage aluminum Christmas tree show at the old library room in City Hall.
The Cascade Locks Retro Christmas Tree Show featured 20 antique trees — Evergleam, Star Band, PECO and more — part of the personal collection of Heather Weaver, Cascade Locks resident and member of the tourism committee. The trees ranged in height from less than 2 feet to more than 6 feet and date to the late 1950s to 1960s.
“Included were some revolving tree stands, where trees spun around, and some color wheels to light up trees,” Weaver said. “Because the trees contain metal, no putting traditional lights directly on the trees!”
The show drew around 60 visitors from Hood River and Cascade Locks, as well as Vancouver and the Portland area.
Weaver said it’s believed that aluminum trees became less popular after the 1965 Charlie Brown Christmas special showed the character of Lucy telling Charlie brown to get “the biggest aluminum tree you can find,” with Charlie instead choosing a small, real one. Eventually, manufacturing ended, but for a while, they were considered the height of modern décor.
