To the editor:
This past week I followed a semi down Highway 97 from Wasco about 11 a.m. No vehicles ahead of us.
I arrived at Biggs Junction with all of the new wide turning lanes and double lanes on both access ramps off of I-84.
As we got to the first light, it turned red, letting two trucks entering from the truck stop and heading south.
The light changed and we proceeded to the second light, which changed, letting a truck head south from the eastbound I-84 ramp.
The light changed and we were stopped by the third light, which let two vehicles continue south from the ridge.
Finally, we were able to access westbound I-84.
If the north-south lights were set to flashing yellow and the east-west lights were set to flashing red, these other vehicles would have been on their way before we got there and the truck ahead of me would have continued over the bridge, non-stop.
Coming home, as I came up the eastbound off-ramp onto Highway 97, four trucks headed south waited on the bridge.
Their light changed and I had time to get ahead of them, but as we pulled up to the southbound light, it turned red.
Two waiting trucks turned south on Highway 37. The light changed and myself and two trucks headed south, but the last two had to stop.
In the past, the worst tie-ups have been caused by the single lanes on I-84 off-ramps.
Here we go again — more pencil pushers in Salem. Look at the waste of time, fuel and more wear and tear on vehicles, plus all that “horrid pollution,” the hand wringers are obsessed with.
Wait until winter comes — great fun will be had by all.
I congratulate the City of The Dalles for turning their downtown lights to flashing in the evening.
