Letter to the editor: Constitution in crisis

A letter to the editor was published on June 3 from Kyle Van Cleave in response to a letter written by Jack Bartell on gay marriage and the fact that a judge does not have authority to declare same-sex marriages. When a state does a petition drive and the vote comes in against an issue, then it comes back and is overturned by one person — this is not the way our constitution and our laws are decided.

Kyle says that our Christian nation is false. How sad is that? His quote was “One nation, under God” does not mean under any specific religion, it means under whomever you look at as “God.” Kyle, did God create just one sex? If so, would you be alive? Yes, we started as a Christian nation and I would be happy to get a constitution in your hands, plus the history of our founding fathers. And you need to apologize to Jack Bartell. He just happens to be a Pearl Harbor survivor, so is 90 years old. He got to see those boats sink in Pearl Harbor. Have you been there?

Do you have any knowledge of all the veterans who went to war and are now not even able to get medical attention? Please, please, our youth need to study history and the sacrifice made to save America. So the real issue, Kyle, is not the same sex issue. It is the freedom that you have because you were born in America and you need to study history and the founding fathers and, yes, the issue of same-sex marriage is not a top priority.

To learn some history, I invite you and all your friends to attend a seminar Thursday, June 19, at 6:30 p.m., at The Dalles Middle School. The speaker is KrisAnne Hall, an attorney who was fired after teaching the Constitution to Tea Party groups. She is a disabled veteran, a mother and a pastor’s wife. She tells the “genealogy” of the Constitution — the 700-year history and the roots of American liberty.
