US taxpayers have paid over $1 trillion for climate change disasters caused by burning fossil fuels. The US Government Climate Assessment says we’ll soon be paying about $1 trillion annually.
We’re socializing the cost of the damage fossil fuel corporations cause while they privatize the profits. This has been called “the biggest market failure in history.”
We need to fix that. The long-standing American principal is Polluter Pays.
Meanwhile, we give fossil fuel corporations $550 billion annually in totally unnecessary government subsidies. (Bloomberg) Renewables get a pittance in comparison. But let’s end all energy subsidies.
We can fight global warming with new and better energy sources that are cheaper, more efficient and safer. With a level playing field, renewable energy will out-compete fossil fuels in the marketplace hands down,
We can transition to clean energy and create 2.8. million US jobs and increase GDP by $75-80 billion annually. (REMI) Here’s how:
Put an escalating carbon pollution fee on all fossil fuels (and imports from carbon polluters like China till they cut their emissions) and rebate those fees, 100 percent, to every American every month, in equal amounts.
Ordinary Americans will switch to clean energy, making a profit in the process, and they’ll buy US products because their rebate money will allow them to afford them again.
No government regulations, expansion or expenditures, It’s revenue-neutral. Supported by George Schultz and Henry Paulson. And people will be able to produce their own energy and sell it back to a 21st century smart grid. Real energy independence.
