To the editor:
It was Christmas, 1945. WWII was over and my dad, Benjamin E. Veatch was a Marine aboard a ship docked in Shanghai harbor, China. He and fellow Marines were longing for home after serving their country. Dad was eager to get back to his young family in Mosier, Oregon.
A supply ship docked beside them and a few Marines ventured next door to the supply ship. They returned carrying a big tube of baloney and a box of red delicious apples from Hood River, Oregon! What a treat to have something from so close to home. They sliced the baloney and devoured that and the beautiful apples.
Dad recalled the apples were a bright shiny red and perfectly crisp. He said, “That was the best Christmas dinner I ever ate.” The apples tasted so good to him that he ate even the cores.
