To the editor:
What would you do if you were a 10-year-old boy whose father lost control of the truck and trailer full of hay?
What would you do after the truck left the road and crashed down the steep embankment, breaking your sister’s leg and trapping your father?
What would you do on a raining, dark lonely road when no one could possibly see the crashed vehicle?
You would do what most people would do; crawl out of the truck, climb to the road and pray for God to send his angels.
That is what happened on Wamic Market grade last Friday evening around 6 p.m.
And thankfully, the young boy’s prayer was answered. A passing motorist found the boy walking down the shoulder. He stopped and returned the lad to the scene and carried the girl to his vehicle. After the call to 911, more angels began to arrive.
Wamic Fire Department arrived and called for more angels.
Tygh Valley Fire Department angels began to arrive. Juniper Flats Fire Department sent a crew of extrication angels and Dufur Fire and Ambulance sent their advanced team.
Wasco County and the Oregon State Police arrived to join the team and Barnetts Towing sent two trucks to stabilize the wreck
Somewhere between 35-40 angels responded and spent the next 7 hours extricating the adult who was trapped in the crushed truck.
In south Wasco County, the angels are many. They are called first responders, medics, firemen, officers, and helpers.
The people of the south county are covered by trained personnel, sometimes better than people in the big cities and most are volunteers.
A cold and rainy Friday night showed just how prepared and trained these volunteers are. Both the children were transported to the hospital and the father was carefully removed from the crash and then transported to MCMC where family was waiting.
The angels then returned to their homes and families after a very long night. Be sure to thank these men and women for their time to train and respond to these emergencies. Better yet, volunteer and become a responder (angel).
