First, I must state that I was amazed to read that the Hood River County School District had decided to cut the position of Activities Director. I state this because, as far as I know, there was absolutely no public discussion of this. I fully believe that there was much "behind the scenes" action. I hope that this decision was not made based on input of a few individuals without giving opportunity for rebuttal.
The fact that I list this position as Activities Director instead of Athletics Director is because the job entails much more than Athletics. I know from personal experience that this position also involves working with all school activities. This means that Glenn is responsible for field trips, club activities, etc. In addition, the fact that this position involves attendance at most Athletic activities and overseeing student involvement, as well as being responsible for finances and student responsible (i.e. grades, etc.) participation makes this a full time position.
If Hood River moves to another conference, as expected, the work for this next year will be magnified. It is absolutely the worst time to cut this position. A teacher, working part time, will not have the time or means to fully administer the program. In effect, it would be easier to move the responsibility to a current administrator than it would to create a new position and expect that person to "jump in" and be successful. I also think that it would be difficult to work in a "peer position" in one aspect and in a "supervisor position" in another aspect. This invites favoritism and hard feelings.
In conclusion I request that reasons be giving for this action. Do not expect the public to believe that this is strictly a monetary action.
