Will Help to Save “Old Ironside”; Leading Elks of Hood River met on Monday morning at the Butler Bank to confer on plans for the campaign to raise funds in Hood River to “Save Old Ironside.” By an act of Congress, passed on Mar. 4, 1925, it was provided that the money necessary to repair, equip and to restore the U. S. frigate “Constitution” (“Old Ironside”) be raised and donated to the secretary of the navy. The fund is of $500,000, of which all except the actual expenses will be donated to the secretary of the navy for the aforesaid purpose.

Contract for the final 28-mile gap in The Dalles-California highway will be let soon following the call for bids made public at the meting of the state highway commission in Portland Tuesday.
A survey is now being made by the city water department for the projected Sorosis park pip line, to tap upper Mill creek. Although definite specifications have not been made, it is understood that the new pipe will be large enough to handle an immense volume of water in accordance with the city development program. The reservoir to care for storage on the new line would be located in the Sorosis park district.

County’s War Bond Purchases Are Unique: Total of All Issues Reaches $8,714,554: Since war financing started on a nation-wide scale in 1941, residents of Hood River county, to the number of slightly more than 10,000 men, women and young people, had purchased up till August 31, 1945, series E bonds in the amount of $4,494,251.
During this period, the total sum of participation in all war bond issues credited to Hood River county was $8,714,554, states the Oregon War Finance committee, through its chairman, E. C. Sammons.
Exclusive of drives during the five-year period, residents purchased E bonds to the amount of $1,550,014, and the total of all issues credited to the county were $1,933,506 ... With records such as this already accomplished, it is anticipated that when the final loan — the Victory Loan — is offered to the people of Hood River county towards the end of October, another splendid record will be in the making in Hood River county.

Bus service through the Columbia gorge, and south by way of The Dalles - California highway, was suspended today as a result of a strike by the drivers over wage scales.
As an aftermath of the Celilo fishing case, in which a number of Oregon commercial fishermen were arrested on a charge of operating a drag seine in Washington waters, an Oregon warrant has been issued against one of the Washington officers involved in the case, it was announced today by Malcom W. Wilkinson, district attorney. The warrant charges Cecil Coker, agent for the Washington bureau of fisheries, with malicious destruction of personal property, in cutting loose a $3,000 drag seine and permitting it to be lost in the Columbia river. Coker was standing on the Oregon shore when he cut the net loose, witnesses have charged.
Indications that The Dalles, as well as other Oregon cities now dumping sewage into open rivers, soon may be required to construct sewage disposal plants, are seen in a letter received today by Mayor George Stadelman, from the Oregon State Sanitary Authority.

Woman Driver Ditches Two Cars: While officers were called Monday to Catherine creek where the body of John Dufe was found, Patrolman Reeves, Marshal Wm. McCremick and Deputy Sherrif Walter were called on a traffic accident on the highway where a motorist has caused damage to two cars. Giving chase, they overtook Mrs. Nina Bohn Glass, the driver at Lyle. She was brought to White Salmon ... it was determined she was driving on the wrong side of the road and [drove] off a car ... into the ditch.

Clinical Research — Dr. William Spina, an orthopedic surgeon recently recruited by Hood river Memorial Hospital, learned last week that the hospital has been approved to conduct clinical research on his specialty — cementless joint replacement. He worked closely for a year with the surgeon who initated this hip joint replacemnt ... “This is an honor ... but it’s the science of orthopedics and the patients who will be the true beneficiaries.” ... Religion is dead at Rajneeshpuram, and the state of Oregon’s case against the incorporation of the commune is negated, according to Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. The commune will attempt to undo the damage left by former secretary Ma Anand Sheela and to exist peacefully with other Oregonians, he said.
Both county and federal grand juries will hear some 80 witnesses subpeonaed at Rajneeshpuram in connection with the charges leveled by the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh who accused some departed commune leaders of activities including attempted murder.
