WHITE SALMON — The City of White Salmon and the West Klickitat Regional Fire Authority announced additional restrictions to mitigate wildfire risk last week and, after a brief delay, construction on Spring Street began on Monday.
Use of the Mount Adams Fish and Game Association shooting range is closed until Fire Chief Wes Long deems conditions are safe enough to reopen. The measure is intended to build upon the existing countywide burn ban, which prohibits all outdoor burning. Enclosed devices that burn solid fuels, such as barbecues and smokers, and liquid-fuel-burning stoves with a shutoff valve, are still allowed, however.
“This is not about restricting lawful firearm use — it’s about reducing ignition risks under extreme seasonal conditions. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping protect our community, homes, and firefighters until fire danger levels drop,” reads a city statement.
Originally slated to begin July 28, work on the North Main Booster Pump Station Project, which will primarily impact the Spring Street right-of-way, extending from the easternmost city limits to the intersection of Hillside Lane and NW Spring Street, began on Aug. 18.
Initial work will be focused on Stage 5 (see map above), in the vicinity of NE Spring Street & NE Tillotson Drive. Residents should expect lane restrictions and potential detours in the construction area, especially as work moves westward, along with equipment noise.
The project primarily involves building a new pump system and upgrading underground water lines, designed to improve both everyday water service and emergency fire flow capacity for residents in the North Main/Simmons Road pressure zone.
