HOOD RIVER — Renowned tattoo artist Jacob Hanks has teamed up with other talented artists to open a new shop in downtown Hood River. Located on the corner of Third and Oak streets, Tattoos on Oak is the first shop in the Gorge to offer walk-in sessions.
Hanks has been tattooing in the Gorge for years. He and his team of artists have worked to gain an avid following and stellar reputation, winning awards like Best of the Gorge and features at the Annual Portland Tattoo Expo. He said customers have proven they will travel far and wide for their caliber of work, flying and driving from all over the world.
Artists Kayla Murray, Jennifer Phipps, and Denver Nitereign, each of whom has an impressive portfolio, are also excited to have space at Tattoos on Oak. Murray will be responsible for a majority of walk-in coverage while Nitereign said he will be the “veteran resident artist” at the shop. Phipps offers distinguished permanent makeup and tattoos by appointment only.
Until now, Hanks and the other artists have worked out of various shops in the Gorge including Satori Tattoo + Skin in White Salmon and Cascade Tattoo Company in The Dalles and Goldendale. Other artists from those shops will be featured as rotating artists at Tattoos on Oak, including Larry Hanks (Jacob’s father), Torey Spaulding-Jimenez and Ana Clark.
“We’re a group of award-winning and world-famous artists, and we have something for everyone from types of artists to price points. We are all-inclusive and want to serve this area and community,” Hanks said.
The group is looking forward to offering easier access to the Gorge community with a shop in downtown Hood River, and hope the foot traffic and tourism in town will bring in frequent walk-ins. “I’m excited to be back in Hood River again,” said Phipps.
“Working in The Dalles is really great. I also like getting to work in my hometown,” said Murray, who was born and raised in Hood River.
When asked if each artist has their own specific style of tattooing, Hanks said that though everyone has their favorites, he believes all artists should be capable of all designs. “Everyone should be able to do every style of ink if they’re going to call themselves a real artist,” he said.
Nitereign, who has won awards for his large Asian color tattoos and also provides piercing services, wrote that his favorite styles of tattoo range from “Asian, Ornamental, watercolor, geometric, dotwork, fineline and micro tattoos.”
Hanks, Phipps and Murray said that, like most shops, they have a minimum around $100. However, they plan on hosting holiday events with flash tattoos that are less expensive, so check out their special offers around holidays like Halloween.
Tattoos on Oak acquired their facility license and officially opened to the public this month. They are now booking and use Facebook for communication and shop updates, with walk-in hours available every day from 9 a.m. until the evening. Clients should know that doors to their building lock around 5 p.m. every day, so they must call the shop to gain entry after that time.
