STEVENSON — The Skamania County Fire Marshals Office began monitoring fire metrics for the county in 2023 to determine when a burn ban is necessary. This is a science-based metric using the best available data.
Due to the different and distinctive climates in the east side of the county, beginning this year, these fire metrics have been split between the east and west side of the county. The dividing line is Dog Mountain going north and includes Cook, Mill-A, Willard, and Underwood. These areas pose a higher risk for wildfire during hotter and dryer weather conditions.
The current fire metrics are showing a potential need for a small debris burn ban on the east side of the county sooner than the rest of the county, which may be implemented as soon as June 1. An official notice will be released when the decision has been made.
“As always, please be sure recreational fires are completely extinguished before leaving them unattended and remain diligent when burning, following all burning conditions and restrictions listed on the burn permit,” said a Skamania County Community Development Department press release. “Making smart, informed decisions and burning responsibly is the best way to prevent wildfires.”
