Turnout lags in special election – The Dalles
It is too late to mail ballots for the Nov. 5 special election, but there is still plenty of time to drop them off at the Wasco County Courthouse.
The election involves a $3.7 million bond to replace the failing municipal swimming pool in The Dalles. The 8,155 voters within the North Wasco County Parks and Recreation District are voting on the issue.
As of Friday evening, voter turnout had lagged compared to the 2011 ballot, which carried a similar, but more expensive measure. Turnout is at just 37.68 percent compared to 39.1 percent in 2011.
Party in Pink works out $1,150 for Susan G. Komen – Hood River
The “Party in Pink” Zumbathon charity event in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month raised $1,150 for the Susan G. Komen For the Cure cancer fund.
A team of 15 local licensed Zumba Fitness instructors led by Alicia Beckman hosted the 90-minute Zumba Fitness event at Westside Elementary on Oct. 12.
“The positive feedback from participants all over the Gorge has been overwhelming,” Beckman said. “We broke records for attendance with 116 participants.”
Volunteers from Portland, Stevenson, White Salmon, Trout Lake, Odell, Hood River, The Dalles and La Grande gathered at Westside Elementary School to dance for the cause.
“The fundraiser resulted in a $1,150 donation to Susan G. Komen as well as an empowering and inspiring time for all present, with recognition and tribute for survivors and loved ones affected by breast cancer,” Beckman said.
The Zumba leadership team includes: Ellen Vorster, Yaritza Berrios, Araceli Elisea, Sarah Fox, Veronica Espe, Alicia Beckman, Kathy Hunsaker, Jan Loomis, Lori Wolford, Sandra Sanchez, Brenda Green, Andrea Dishman, Julie Cantrell, Amancay Maahs and Hannah Sigler. www.hoodrivernews.com
Businessman marks 50 years - Dallas
There may only be one subject Stan Schmidt, the owner of Stan Schmidt State Farm Insurance Agency in Dallas, knows better than insurance. That would be model trains, a favorite hobby of his since he was 15 years old.
However, Friday, Schmidt is celebrating 50 years in business in what was perhaps an unexpected career.
"Over time you just work hard and you try to take care of people," Schmidt said of running his agency for five decades this November. "You tell the truth."
