HOOD RIVER — The Hood River Rotary Club has delivered a dictionary to every fifth grader at each accredited school in the county since 1994. This year, the club will deliver a record 336 books.
As education has become more and more electronic-based, the club has wondered whether the paper-based program has run its course.
“Every year, including this one, the teachers and students have confirmed that this is still a vital learning tool. It makes kids think outside the current education box,” said Rotarian Paul Crowley. He has chaired the program since 1995.
Hood River Stationers provides the books to Rotary at a discount. This year, the cost per book increased by 45 cents.
“Jessie Paige, the store’s owner, did not pass that increase along to us. She’s been quite wonderful to work with,” said Crowley.
