Contributed photoTHE DALLES — Code Enforcement’s “public enemy number one,” Puncture Vine (commonly known as Goat Head) is growing quickly and aggressively in this community, The Dalles Police Department (TDPD) announced.
Property owners are responsible for controlling vegetation on their property, and from their property line to the sidewalk, planting strip, curbing, street or alley, according to the press release.
Guidelines: Don’t mow or weed trim puncture vine, to avoid spreading seeds and multiplying the problem.
To remove, dig up and dispose of puncture vine in a bag, to discourage the spread of seeds.
If the patch of puncture vine is too big to pull, apply herbicide — several applications during summer, as new seedlings begin to develop. The best way to slow its spread is to prevent it from coming onto your property, so check bicycle and vehicle tires, shoes and pets’ paws.
Maintaining a healthy lawn will also help discourage it; puncture vine does not thrive in irrigated ground.
