Assault by energy drink — A trooper stopped a vehicle for speeding at 90 mph on I-84, Dec. 27. The driver was arrested for Columbia County warrants and criminal mischief. The passenger threw an unopened energy drink at the trooper, and was ultimately arrested for assaulting a public safety officer and obstructing governmental administration.
The trooper attempted to talk to the other person, who spit in his face.
Injury crash — Oregon State Police responded to a single vehicle, rolled over at milepost 90 westbound on Highway 26, at about 6:28 a.m. Jan. 1. Two people had serious injuries. Wheeler County deputies and ambulance responded, and both occupants were transported to a John Day hospital.
OSP’s investigation found the westbound vehicle lost control on packed ice and snow negotiating a corner, slid across the eastbound lane and rolled several times on its route about 50 yards down a steep embankment, before landing upside-down in a creek bed. It was towed.
Catch and seize — An angler was seen carrying a sturgeon on the bank near Rufus Jan. 1. Multiple measurements found the fish was under the legal size — by less than half an inch. The fish was seized for donation to a local food bank, and the angler warned for taking undersized white sturgeon. Later on Jan. 2, an undersized sturgeon was seized from a Bonneville Pool angler. This sturgeon measured 3.25 inches — 0.75 inch under the limit.
Not so fast — A Subaru Forester lost control on I-84, going too fast for conditions near westbound milepost 76. It hit the center barrier and rolled. The driver was taken to an area hospital for minor injuries, and got a ticket.
