Ford Motor Company is recalling 565,691 Ford Broncos built between 2020 and 2026 after discovering that about 1% of the vehicles could have a defective engine compartment wiring harness. The harness defect could result in a short, heat, or spark that may cause a fire in the engine compartment, according to Ford’s recall notice.
The recall follows Ford’s investigation of customer reports of smoke coming from air vents and flames coming from the passenger’s side engine compartment while owners were driving.
Ford said it was aware of 15 incidents involving 2021–2026 model year Broncos. Incident dates ranged from Oct. 15, 2024, to June 20, 2026. Ford said in its recall notice that it’s not aware of any reported accidents or injuries due to the defect.
What’s next for affected Bronco owners
In addition to smoke and fire, signs of the defect include a cluster warning message. To remedy the defect, Ford will install sheathing over the wiring to prevent chafing and shorts.
Affected owners can bring their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have the issue addressed free of charge. Ford’s number for the recall is 26S55.
Ford will begin sending notification letters to Bronco owners on Aug. 24, 2026. It’s already begun notifying dealers. Drivers who don’t want to wait for official notice to find out if their vehicle is affected canlook up the recallusing their VIN on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website.
