A cake has been Massachusetts’ official pie for almost 30 years, ever since lawmakers made Boston cream pie the commonwealth’s dessert emblem. The dessert is a layered sponge cake with no pie crust, and Massachusetts has since passed at least one more law about the same flavor. Lawmakers have also tried, more than once, to add a third law to that list, but none have succeeded.
