Land-based eclipse chasing usually means the same short list of headaches: hours of traffic converging on one small town, parking lots that fill up before dawn, cell service that drops right when everyone is trying to check the forecast one last time. None of that exists in the middle of the ocean. This week, guests aboard three Atlas Ocean Voyages yachts got a different kind of eclipse experience entirely, one built around open water instead of a crowded field.
Guests aboard all three of Atlas Ocean Voyages’ expedition yachts gathered on open decks this week for the eclipse, each vessel positioned along a different stretch of open water. World Traveller sat off Palma de Mallorca en route to Ibiza. World Navigator held position off Patreksfjörður, Iceland. World Voyager sailed between Scoresby Sund and Ísafjörður in the North Atlantic. No buildings, no tree lines, no crowds pressed shoulder to shoulder on a hillside. Just open water and a clear line to the sky.
2 years of planning, 1 moment
The positioning was not last-minute. Atlas began to planning the voyages more than two years ago, working out where each yacht needed to be for the best possible view. An onboard astronomer traveled with guests in the days before totality, walking them through the science of the eclipse and building anticipation before the sky went dark. Travel advisor Casey Carr of Carr World Travel, who sailed for the event, said the enrichment programming set the tone for the entire voyage.
“We have an astronomer onboard who has been educating us about solar eclipses and really sparking our imaginations before the big event finally arrived,” Carr said. “Atlas supplied the eye protection we needed, they had special eclipse-themed cocktails, and there was an incredible air of excitement on board.”
James A. Rodriguez, president and CEO of Atlas Ocean Voyages, said the payoff justified the years of preparation. “To see that planning come together across three of our yachts, with our guests gathered on deck sharing this once-in-a-lifetime moment, is incredibly rewarding,” he said.
For guests who have missed it before, next year is already booked
Not every eclipse chaser gets a clear sky. James L., a 14-time Atlas Ocean Voyages guest, had planned trips around two previous total eclipses and watched clouds roll in both times. Aboard World Navigator this week, the sky finally cleared just ahead of totality. “It’s been fantastic on every front, we’re loving every minute,” he said.
The anticipation had been building for years. Casey Carr of Carr World Travel, who sailed for this week’s event, said the countdown started the moment Atlas first announced the voyages. “This was an adventure that began for a lot of us, more than two years ago when Atlas first announced this cruise,” Carr said. “It’s been on our calendar ever since, and our excitement grew every day closer we came to departure.”
That kind of payoff, watching years of anticipation actually deliver, is exactly what Atlas is now selling for next year. World Traveller’s eight-night Solar Eclipse Expedition departs Barcelona on July 27, 2027, sailing through Ibiza, Cartagena, Motril and Puerto Banús before positioning at sea for the eclipse and concluding in Lisbon. Resident astronomer Jonathan Ward, a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, will guide guests through the event, with fares starting at $9,999 per person. It carries the same model forward: a ship positioned for totality, an astronomy expert onboard and open water instead of a crowded hillside, giving eclipse chasers who have been let down before another shot at getting it right.
Atlas is already looking past 2027
Atlas is already planning past that voyage, too. In 2028, the line will debut Atlas Adventurer, its first Atlas-class yacht and what the company describes as the world’s first luxury expedition sailing yacht. Its December 23, 2028, voyage from Bangkok to Bali will put guests in Singapore for a total lunar eclipse, watching the moon turn red 16 minutes after midnight as 2029 begins. For travelers who have spent years chasing a clear sky, the next opportunity is already on the books.
