Mystery discovery

 While putting in a trellis for his wife Autumn, local resident Chris Loyd found these stone balls some six inches deep next to a sidewalk in The Dalles. Loyd immediately stopped digging, not wanting to disturb an archaeological site at one of The Dalles’ earliest houses, which was built near Old Fort Dalles. He is now researching the house’s history. The spheres may be Native game pieces, but are unfamiliar and a little mysterious to Susan Buce, registrar at Columbia Gorge Discovery Center (left).
