Nicole Schrankel, PharmD, recently received the 2014 Excellence in Innovation Award from the Oregon State Pharmacy Association for her exceptional dedication and commitment to the pharmacy profession.
In 2013, Schrankel co-founded MTMCare, a leader in the design, delivery and administration of medication therapy management (MTM) programs and clinical pharmacy services. Schrankel and her partner, Randee Bowder, RPh, employ a network of pharmacists around the country who collectively talk to more than 10,000 patients annually. Most of these patients have serious medical conditions, are on multiple medications and, in many cases, housebound. By providing one-on-one counseling and targeted interventions both over the phone and face-to-face, MTMCare helps patients avoid medication-related problems before they become serious.
“Nicole is a passionate advocate for the profession of pharmacy and her ability to speak about how pharmacists are improving the lives of patients is truly inspiring,” said Josh Bishop, PharmD Director, Health Services, PacificSource, when nominating Schrankel for the Excellence in Innovation Award, which Schrankel received on Nov. 8. “As a clinical pharmacist working alongside the primary care medical team, she is improving clinical outcomes for some of the most medically complex and vulnerable patients in the state.”
“It’s an honor to be recognized by my peers for the work I’m doing both as an entrepreneur and as a pharmacist,” said Schrankel, a graduate of Oregon State University.
Schrankel earned a Doctorate of Pharmacy from Idaho State University. “I’m proud to be at the forefront of the movement to incorporate pharmacists as part of the patient-centered, team-based approach to primary care.”
An increasing number of health plans are recognizing MTM and clinical pharmacy services as a cost-effect way to help ensure that patients live longer, healthier lives, Schrankel adds.
Based in Hood River, MTMCare is a leader in the design, delivery and administration of medication therapy management (MTM) programs and clinical pharmacy services. MTMCare’s nationwide network of pharmacists provide one-on-one counseling and targeted interventions, both over the phone and face-to-face, to high-risk patients. MTMCare’s compassionate and experienced pharmacists provide support and deliver expert advice as a way to reduce medication-related health problems. Serving an estimated 10,000 patients annually, MTMCare is improving the lives of patients and cutting health care costs for both the people and organizations it serves.
