Hood River Elks No. 1507 have chosen their final two “Students of the Month” for this year. Sophia Marble and Cole Shepherd, both seniors at Hood River Valley High School, are May winners, each receiving checks for $100 at a recent meeting.
Sophia is described by her coaches and teachers as artistic, an amazing photographer, and a role model to other students, as she treats everyone with respect and compassion. She stands out in school and in the community academically, athletically, socially and in a leadership role.
Sophia is a three sport athlete, participating in soccer — she was goalie for Bridlemile Soccer Club — as well as a long distance track and field member competing at district in 1500km freshman and junior year and 3K her sophomore year, and varsity cross country member while maintaining a 3.89 GPA taking honors and AP classes. She is a member of the National Honor Society, where she volunteers in community fundraisers and has put in over 20 hours in community service work in addition to tutoring struggling students.
She is a member of the chess club, the Phoenix Club — putting on shows for local elementary schools and community members, dancing and acting — and she played Irma in “Madwoman of Challiot.” She is a leader in Young Life, mentoring and being a role model for younger attendees.
Sophia has volunteered many hours to give back to the community: She is an AVID Tutor for Wy’east Middle School, helping with tutorial request forms, binder checks, and keeping the group focused; she volunteered at the middle school track meets keeping heat sheets, announcing events and check-ins; she organized children’s toys and books, packed apples and pears, and loaded gifts to needy people for the Christmas Project; she was a Link Leader, giving orientation to incoming freshman students; she participated in Vampires and Victims 5K, dressing up in Halloween costumes, handing out prizes and trailing the racers on her bike; she set up drills and helped with basic techniques for HRV Kids Soccer Camp; cleaned up garbage at Cardinal Glass for HRV Girls Soccer Team; volunteered at FISH Food Bank to gather Christmas presents into groups and handing out to families in need; handed out charms at Wildcats Race and set-up and cleaned up for Trust Benefit Dinner.
Sophia was Poetry School Champion in 2012 and was soccer team’s Most Inspirational player for three years. In cross country, she was first team all-conference twice, led the team to an eighth place finish at the state meet twice, and was voted Homecoming Queen.
Sophia is the daughter of Don and Kristin Marble, and she has a brother Zachary and a sister Audrey. She plans to attend Western Washington University in Bellingham with an undeclared major, but possibly Environmental Science or Spanish.
Cole maintains a 3.98 GPA, and it looks as if he’s taking every AP and honors class available. He has been awarded AP Scholar with Distinction, commended student in the National Merit Scholarship Program, voted friendliest boy in the senior class, was invited to honors recital for piano and will be competing at OMTA Syllabus Level X this year.
His hobbies are meteorology, whitewater boating, kiteboarding, surfing and skiing. A teacher has described Cole as the most motivated student that she had ever taught with study patterns that are thorough and very detailed.
Cole has been a member of the National Honors Society since his sophomore year, and has escorted recipients at the Evening of Excellence; he’s a member of the varsity tennis team; he participated in high school’s musical “Legally Blonde;” he is a member of Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow headed by OSU since his freshman year, in which they study microclimates, reporting the amount of rain and snowfall in the area around his house; he was assistant and then patrol leader for his boy scout troop, where he attended meetings, campouts and achieved the rank of Star; and is a member of 4-H in which he and his dog are two-time county obedience champions qualifying for the state fair.
Cole’s Community Service includes the following: He has played piano recitals to benefit Hospice, Hood River Adopt-A-Dog and Rowena Wildlife Center; he volunteers for Hood River Adopt-A-Dog at the Hukari Animal Shelter exercising, feeding and caring for the dogs as well as creating new landscaping around the property and cleaning pens for Community Work Day; he participated in The Christmas Project, distributing food and toys to needy families; during 2105, he volunteered at the San Francisco Zoo Animal Hospital and observed veterinary medicine; he worked on several conservation and trail-building projects on a 12-day backpack trip on the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico; and he helped rebuild the area around the Tsuruta Tennis Courts on May Street, which included installing benches and restoring vegetation to the spectator area.
Cole also worked as a raft guide on the Deschutes River for Deschutes U-Boat.
He is the son of Greg Shepherd and Robin Henson. He plans to attend Stanford University with a possible major of Earth Environmental Science.
