WHITE SALMON — The Blue Skies Bakery, based in White Salmon, recently won the Good Food Award for their Cardamom-Coconut Granola. This award highlights businesses that excel in both flavor and sustainability, and the Blue Skies Bakery put a lot of effort into those two facets of their business.
Their commitment to sustainability is baked into their ethos, and guides the entirety of their process, from where they source their ingredients to how they deal with their seconds and scraps. They strive for a “balance of organic and local,” their sustainability practices say. From their base in the Pacific Northwest, they source clean, non-GMO ingredients and packaging. To reduce their carbon footprint, Blue Skies has partnered with a co-packing company to bake and pack their goods.
Not ones to rest on their laurels, Blue Skies is also launching a brand-new grain-free granola flavor. In addition to the three flavors they already sell, all of which are award-winning in their own right, they are adding Grain-Free Coconut-Pecan Granola. This option, like the rest of their flavors, is certified vegan and kosher, and when they make it, they test the surfaces for trace amount of gluten so they can be confident it’s fully grain-free.
Blue Skies has begun a monthly giving program to “support the people and wild places that make our world so beautiful,” in the words of owner Krissy Biernacki. Through this program Blue Skies Bakery will donate 1% of their sales to local nonprofits, including Washington Farmland Trust, Culture Seed, Washington Native Plant Society, Columbia Land Trust and WAGAP Food Bank.
You can find them online at www.blueskiesbakery.com and on Instagram and Facebook @blueskiesbakery, as well as in coffee shops and stores throughout the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, Idaho and Nevada.
