HOOD RIVER — Local artist Joy Kloman was one of ten selected to participate in the 21st Rothko Symposium in Daugavpils, Latvia — the birthplace of artist Mark Rothko — which took place from Sep. 12-27. Three of Kloman’s paintings were acquired for the permanent collection of the Rothko Museum, where the event was held.
Before moving to Hood River, Kloman was a tenured Associate Professor at the University of Mississippi, supervising graduate and undergraduate painting programs. She has participated in many invitational artist residencies, including trips to Italy, Hungary, Sardinia, Slovenia and Vashon Island. Her art resides in many public and private collections across the globe.
The museum’s namesake, Rothko, made his journey from Latvia to Portland circa 1913. Traveling in the opposite direction as an Oregonian artist, Kloman is honored to represent the Pacific Northwest and celebrate this historic connection.
She was present at the museum for Rothko’s birthday, where his daughter, Dr. Kate Rothko Prizel, donated two drawings by her father and presented a public lecture about preserving his legacy.
Kloman was recently awarded a generous Career Opportunity Grant from The Ford Foundation through the Oregon Arts Commission to attend the Hangar Center for Artistic Research artist residency in Lisbon, Portugal, next year.
