THE DALLES — On April 15, North Wasco County School District (NWCSD) reported an investigation was taking place following reports that an object resembling a weapon was seen to have “fallen out of a student’s pocket” on The Dalles High School (TDHS) campus.
According to a post on the NWCSD Facebook page, nearby students who saw the item reported the incident to school administrators, though the youth had already left campus by the time staff were notified. The district immediately contacted local law enforcement in accordance with safety protocols.
“Officers responded promptly and conducted a home visit to ensure the safety of our students and staff. Law enforcement confirmed that there was no substantiated threat or cause for immediate concern. It is also important to note that there were no verbal threats reported in connection with this incident,” the post said.
In an April 16 update, the district reported that law enforcement determined the reported item “was a non-lethal replica, such as an airsoft or gel blaster-style weapon, and was brought onto campus by a youth enrolled at another school site.”
In a follow-up comment, district officials stated the incident had taken place towards the end of the school day, and why the youth was reportedly on campus is part of an ongoing internal investigation.
“As a reminder, weapons of any kind — including look-alike items — are strictly prohibited on school campuses. We ask all families to continue speaking with their children about the importance of following school safety policies and to check backpacks regularly,” the post said.
The post reiterated that all reported safety concerns and potential threats are taken seriously and investigated, and urge families to discuss district safety policies with their students as those found in violation may face disciplinary action “including suspension, expulsion, and involvement of law enforcement, depending on the severity of the situation.”
“We understand that incidents like this can be unsettling for students, staff, and families. Please know that the safety and well-being of our school community remain our top priorities,” the post said.
