A hiker fell to his death this weekend in the Columbia River Gorge near Angel’s Rest in Multnomah County.
The deceased was identified as Michael A. Cigler, 29, of Hillsboro.
At approximately 10 a.m. Sunday, Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to assist Corbett Fire Department on a medical call near the top of the Angel’s Rest trail.
The caller reported the hiker (an adult male) she was with had fallen from a rock near the top of Angel’s Rest they had been sitting on. She could not see where he had fallen down because of the thick brush covering the ground and he was not responding to her when she called out to him.
A Corbett Fire Department hasty team along with AMR responded up from the Angel’s Rest trailhead on the call. Another hiker passing through the area stopped and was able to make his way down from the trail to the hiker who had fallen and reported the male was unresponsive and he could not detect a pulse.
Corbett Fire Department personnel arriving at the top of Angel’s Rest rappelled down to the fallen hiker and confirmed the hiker was deceased.
The hiker appeared to have fallen approximately 75 feet down off the trail and then traveled another 30-40 feet before he came to a stop on the hill. Alcohol may have been a contributing factor. Angel’s Rest trail remained closed while rescue personnel recovered Cigler’s body. MCSO Detectives are conducting the death investigation.
