THE GORGE — To honor the people who have defended our freedoms, many communities across the Gorge are celebrating veterans, beginning Thursday, Nov. 7 with a school assembly with Dufur School staff and students.
“The school will honor our U.S. veterans at their annual Veterans Day assembly,” said a press release. “All veterans are invited to attend a pre-assembly reception at 8:30 a.m. Dean of Students Jon Colasuonno said there will be a shuttle service from the parking lot to the upper gym for those who may need it. We look forward to celebrating and expressing our gratitude to our veterans for their service.”
On Friday, Nov. 8, the Klickitat and Skamania county Veterans Stand Down and Expo will be presented by the Mt. Adam’s Elks Lodge No. 1868. Many events are free of charge, but check your local listings for specific event details.
The Stand Down and Expo will be held at the Mt. Adams Elk Lodge, 124 NE Church Ave., White Salmon, and opens at 10 a.m. All veterans will receive a free lunch.
The following day, Saturday, Nov. 9, have breakfast at the Hood River Elks Lodge, 304 Cascade Ave., Hood River, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Food has been donated by Safeway and will be prepared by volunteers, said a press release. That same afternoon, visit the Western Antique and Aeroplane & Automobile Museum’s (WAAAM) Second Saturday event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; this month’s focus is military vehicles. The museum is located at 1600 Air Museum Road, Hood River.
Veteran’s Day is Monday, Nov. 11, and in Hood River, the American Legion Hood River Post 22 and Commander Carl Casey will present the 2024 Hood River Veterans Day Ceremony at Anderson’s Tribute Center beginning at 11 a.m. The event will feature the Gorge Composite Squadron Cadets and trumpeter Kate Dougherty; Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Celilo chapter will be providing refreshments.
“We wish to honor all veterans with a special emphasis this year on post-Vietnam era veterans,” Casey said. He added the tribute will include acknowledging the separate branches of the military, a story from a fellow veteran and other video tributes.
In The Dalles, the annual veterans day parade will start at 11 a.m. Line up on Eighth Street between Cherry Heights and Webber; the parade route begins at Sixth and Webber, going through downtown and ending at the chamber office.
