HOOD RIVER — Two voter action programs have been working hard to help people stay informed and understand the significance of their vote.
The Columbia Gorge Women’s Action Network (CGWAN) sponsored a postcard writing project this fall through Progressive Turnout Project, and Swing Left (Columbia Gorge) has run a letter writing campaign to encourage people to vote with handwritten letters addressed to those who may be unlikely to vote in the upcoming election. Both efforts are aimed at key swing states like Michigan and Georgia.
Swing Left’s letter-writing campaign has sent out “approximately 30,000 handwritten, hand-stamped and addressed letters” since 2020, and in that election some states were won by Democrats by just a few thousand votes. “We can honestly say we have done something to contribute to that outcome,” said the press release.
Names and addresses are supplied through Votefwd.org, and Swing Left participants began meeting monthly to write letters beginning in March. For more information about this project, contact Sarah Bellinson at 646-644-2109, or by email at sbellinson@gmail.com.
The postcard campaign’s 40 volunteers sent out 3,600 postcards from June to October, “using research-backed tactics to rally voters” provided by the Progressive Turnout Project, said the press release. “CGWAN encourages everyone to check their voter registration online before Election Day to ensure all information is accurate and up to date.” To do so, visit Vote411.org.
