THE DALLES — Mid-Columbia Economic Development District (MCEDD) Mobility and Travel Training Program Manager Sara Crook wants Wasco County middle and high school students to know they can ride the Link bus free of charge and earn prizes this summer, through Sept. 1.
Crook presented during the public comment period on non-agenda items at the July 24 North Wasco County School District (NWCSD) 21 board meeting.
Called “Summer of Freedom,” the new program was designed as a way for youth to get comfortable with public transit and ride for free by showing their student ID; Crook said there is a similar program in Hood River County with Columbia Area Transit (CAT).
To sign up, visit The Dalles Library or the Link Transit Center. Crook said they just need the student’s name and city of residence.
Students must be 17 or younger. Each ride equals a prize stamp for items from Shannon’s Ice Cream, Angel’s Bakery, Brick City, and Mod Pizza. MCEDD has also partnered with the Wasco County Library District’s summer reading program, and students who take a photo of themselves reading a book at the bus stop or on the bus and show it to a librarian will receive a pool pass.
“They can go and say, ‘I want to have ice cream.’ So they sign up, they take a card for Shannon’s Ice Cream, and then they have to board the bus where there is a magic red Gorge Transit stamp,” Crook explained. “The bus driver will get them and once they have that card stamped, they can go get their ice cream.”
