Brothers Evan and David Klein began serving hungry customers at the riverside spot in early June. Their cart marks the first eatery to set up base at the south end of Nichols Basin — along the Port of Hood River’s Nichols West Edge Trail — and it’s a rare chance to pick up Indian food in town.
“Dhaba” refers to a common phrase in India for a humble roadside eatery, Evan said.
The Kleins, who have a history in homemade cooking, offer authentic Punjabi food cooked in a traditional clay oven known as a Tandoor. They began serving lunch, but starting this week they’ll be open for dinner.
The Tandoori chicken plate stands out as one of Dhaba Dhaba’s mainstay dishes. Other highlights include samosas — savory pastries with chutney — naan bread, mango drinks and homemade Indian cream.
The cart site, neighboring Gorge Paddling Center, offers a couple parking spaces, and the Event Site lot is a quick walk to the north along the port’s trail. The slick red design of Kleins’ cart, painted by J&S Signs from Portland, welcomes customers. Diners can catch views of the river basin and kite boarders in action from Dhaba Dhaba’s benches.
“We’re really excited,” Evan said of the business opening. “We want people to know (we’re) a family-friendly place.”
The Klein brothers hope to make Hood River a long-term home for their business.

Dhaba Dhaba is open Wednesday-Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. The cart began as a lunch destination, but starting this Wednesday, Dhaba Dhaba will be open for dinner.
