BINGEN — The Bingen City Council met Aug. 6 for its regular bi-monthly meeting.
Fire Chief Carl Spratt led off with a brief report on the numerous wildfires in the area. Council members were apprised of the difference between mutual aid fire events, in which all nearby fire departments respond to the extent possible with no extra funding, and reimbursable events, meaning the firefighters are partly paid by the state, which occurs when the fire goes to the level of state mobilization.
Tammara Tippel presented on behalf of the Mt. Adams Chamber of Commerce in regards to the Visit Bingen campaign. Councilors were impressed by the team’s progress on the website, www.bingenwashington.com, different from the city website which is www.bingenwashington.org. The Visit Bingen site features blog postings and promotes Bingen’s businesses, arts, and events. Tippel explained that the team is working on developing social media presence, and adding details to the site’s links.
Two projects occupied council attention. The Oak St. Reservoir replacement is set to be complete in the coming month. The new reservoir was sanitized, filled, and observed to check for leaks. A resulting leak was fixed from the outside, and just a few more small tasks remain before the reservoir can be used at full capacity. While the East Steuben waterline is currently being actively replaced, the West Steuben waterline is set for a future replacement. Councilors heard the initial plans for this $1.4 million project, currently in early design stages.
Bingen’s centennial celebration continues all year, with numerous events slated for September. There will be a 5K run on Saturday, Sept. 7, during the Huckleberry Fest weekend. A pie-eating contest will be held the same day; with only 50 spots available, residents are encouraged to sign up early. Also on Sept. 7, the city will hold a Chalk the Block contest from 7-10 a.m. The city will provide the chalk and guidelines, and cash prizes will be offered to the winners. The following weekend, on Sept. 14, the Bingen Theater will host the Bingen Game Show at 7 p.m. In December, in conjunction with the Santa in the Park event, the city will hold a Light the Town contest. They are looking for donations of working holiday lights to share with anyone wishing to participate. All of the events are detailed on the city’s website.
The next meeting of the Bingen City Council is on Tuesday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m.
