The Cascade Locks Port Commission has decided to postpone its search for a new port general manager and keep on the current port interim general manager, Paul Koch, for the time being.
During its regular meeting last Thursday, the port commission authorized the extension of Koch’s contract, which was set to expire at the end of next month, until June 30, 2015. Koch has been serving as the “interim” general manager of the port since February 2013.
The commission was in the process of interviewing two candidates, John Herron, of Hood River, and Dana Peck, of Goldendale, Wash., for the position, but ultimately decided to not select anyone at this time.
According to Koch, the commission decided it did not feel comfortable hiring a new general manager at a time when the port is tackling a number of different issues, including ongoing economic development projects, making changes to the master plan for Industrial Park, discussing utility rates with the city of Cascade Locks, as well as rebuilding the port’s maintenance department. The port is also in the midst of two other leadership changes: new Economic Development Manager Don Mann was just hired last month, and the port commission is looking for a replacement for former Commissioner Scot Sullenger, who resigned from the commission early last month.
Koch added the commissioners were “very appreciative of the two candidates,” who went through a rigorous interview process that spanned several weeks.
Koch said the port will likely start the process all over again in several months, and that Herron and Peck would “certainly be able to apply in the fall if they so desired.”
