It’s official — The Port of Cascade Locks has closed on a land sale with Heuker Family Lands LLC of Warrendale.
The fishing company on Jan. 14 bought 3.38 acres of heavy industrial property, located at 1475 N.E. Columbia Gorge Way in the Port’s Business Park. There, the Heukers plan to set up a 10,000 square-foot fish processing, smoking and packaging facility.
The Heuker family expects to break ground in fall; designs are already underway.
The business plans to employ up to 10 people over the next two years.
“This is a great opportunity for the Port and the community, and we welcome the Heuker family business to Cascade Locks,” Port Commission President Jess Groves said.
As a business plan, Heukers will bring in fresh fish they catch for processing and packaging. The Heukers have 30 years of experiencing in the fishing industry — their fishing spots include the Columbia River and Alaska.
“Our long-term goal is to develop markets for smoked fish, frozen fish, and crab, which will provide year-round employment as well as rebuild the old dock and waterfront facilities for the off-loading of fresh fish product from local tenders,” co-owner Tim Heuker said.
A processing plant would allow the company to brand fish for sale in cities throughout the Gorge and Oregon. As of now, the Heukers truck off their fresh product directly to buyers.
The Heukers now own two pieces of property in Cascade Locks — the Port parcel and the historic fire hall at 505 WaNaPa St., into which they are considering bringing new tenants.
Though smaller businesses have emerged in Cascade Locks in recent years — Brigham Fish Market, Jumpin’ Jax Java and Thunder Island Brewing — the Heuker plant could mark the first large-scale industrial user since Bear Mountain Forest Products.
