CASCADE LOCKS — Repairs are on schedule for damage to the historic sternwheeler Columbia Gorge — resulting from its collision with the Thunder Island footbridge after an unscheduled unmooring in the high winds of Jan. 13 — attendant damage to the bridge, and destruction of a local family’s fishing platform, Port of Cascade Locks commissioners heard at their March 19 meeting.
Port administration were able to work with JettyLight’s insurance to provide a check to the family whose fishing platform was destroyed, said Port Executive Director Jeremiah Blue.
The Thunder Island footbridge was successfully lifted off the damaged bearings, Operation Manager Parker Nelson reported, and awaits a welding company’s repairs. Over the next few weeks, it will be lifted back onto new bearings, with girders, decking, electricity, and water lines to be fixed by multiple different contractors. Reopening is still on schedule for April 15, before scheduled weddings.
The historic sternwheeler got underway on March 18, leaving for repair of the damage inflicted by its collision with the footbridge, and to acquire an updated electronics system. It may return in three or four weeks.
Thanks in part to commissioner Rob Peterson’s work and lifejacket donations from the Sheriff’s Office, a new lifejacket station is slated for the marina.
