The existing roof on the Mt. View Grange is estimated to be 50-plus years old, and nails are popping out. On May 18, the Grange hosts the Balsamroot Bash, a fundraiser for new roof loan costs.

WHITE SALMON — The upcoming Balsamroot Bash, Saturday, May 18, is an opportunity to participate in White Salmon’s Wildflower Festival and raise funds for the long overdue roof on the Mt. View Grange building.
No one involved with the Grange remembers how old the roof is, but they estimate more than 50. “You can see nails popping all over the roof and we have leakage. Pieces have flown off in windstorms,” said Board Member Gigi Pomerantz.
The Balsamroot Bash kicks off with a free presentation, “Bring back the Pollinators,” at 5 p.m. by Xerces Society Ambassador Lisa Loving. She will talk of the importance of pollinators and native plants, and describe how to turn backyard gardens into pollinator havens.
From 7-8 p.m., the Center Street Band will play live music, followed by a showcase of dance classes held at the Mt. View Grange.
The program fits well with Mt. View Grange’s mission to be an inclusive community hub offering relevant programs to educate, recreate and enrich lives of all with the goal of improving the quality of life in the Columbia River Gorge.
Thanks to the advocacy of Rep. Gina Mosbrucker and Sen. Curtis King, Mt. View Grange is the recipient of a reimbursable grant to replace the old roof. Because of the high cost, the Grange will need a loan to complete the work. The goal of the Balsamroot Bash is to raise funds to cover the cost of the loan.

“The Mt. View Grange is all the people who bring their programs and passions. It is here for all to celebrate and congregate. The Grange Board is dedicated to keeping it affordable. It really does take a village and we have a great and supportive village,” said Ruth Olin, Grange secretary.
Get tickets now for $20, or $25 at the door. A generous donor will match all funds raised at the Balsamroot Bash. The Mt. View Grange is located at 1085 N. Main Ave. in White Salmon.

The Grange offers many programs. Come hear about some of them such as Recovery Cafe, which offers a safe place for those suffering from trauma, and Underwood Conservation District’s new Food and Farm Tool Library. You can borrow conservation oriented farm and garden tools such as the no-till drill and soon also food preservation equipment like dehydrators, meat grinders and honey extractors.
The idea is to provide community access to tools one may want to use a couple times a year but can be expensive to own. Information about conservation and sustainable practices is provided by the Conservation District with the check-out of all items.
