THE DALLES — On Wednesday, Feb. 21, U.S. river cruise line American Queen Voyages (AQV), which frequently docks in The Dalles during cruise season, announced they had declared bankruptcy and would be ceasing operations.
According to a website created to issue refunds to those who have already purchased AQV cruises, aqvinfo.com, the company was “unable to rebound from the effects of the pandemic,” and had become financially unsustainable.
The City of The Dalles made a statement about the company’s closure in which they noted that the city has a lease agreement with American Cruise Lines (ACL), rather than AQV, but they do still work with AQV through ACL.
In the statement, they said city staff reached out to ACL to see if there had been any impacts to their operations and to verify there would still be a commitment to the city and community for the upcoming cruise ship season.
“For our company, American Cruise Lines, I can reassure you that we are stronger than ever,” American Cruise Lines Director of Government Affairs Kristin Meira told the city, according to the statement. “Not only are we seeing record demand across our fleet, we are also planning for continued growth. We recently announced that we have five ships under construction in the next two years, with two new ship deliveries this year.”
The city will continue to work with ACL and receive cruise ship traffic, the statement said.
