Signing on to Season 3 of Password is a big responsibility for showrunner Jeffrey Breeden since the first two seasons have had so much success. However, with how popular the NBC show is, he will have no problem taking the game show into another season.
Password, hosted by Keke Palmer, features Jimmy Fallon, who is also the executive producer, as the continuous celebrity guest on every episode. He and a contestant face off against another celebrity and contestant to try to win the top prize of $25,000.
The competitors can only say one word at a time to try to get their teammate to say the correct password, which the audience, both at home and in the studio, as well as Palmer and the person who has the card, can see. Whoever correctly guesses the password earns points depending on how long it took them to solve it. At the end, whoever has the most points gets to compete in the bonus round for a chance to win up to $25,000.
Password is an iteration of the 1961 game show, which was rebottled numerous times. Betty White was like Fallon in the sense that she appeared on nearly every episode during the first run.
The first episode will feature Fallon and Anthony Anderson playing with two contestants. This season, although no twists or added elements will be featured, it will have theme nights, including The Traitors, Love Island, and The Real Housewives. Alan Cumming, Ariana Madix, Luann de Lesseps, and Dorinda Medley will fill the seats during those episodes.

TVI: Jimmy is sort of like the new Betty White, appearing on every episode. How does the show continue to honor the long legacy of Password, while keeping it fresh for today’s audience?
Breeden: Password does a great job of balancing nostalgia with modern energy, and Jimmy’s role is a big part of that. Like Betty White in the classic versions, Jimmy becomes the familiar constant viewers return to each episode. He gives the reboot continuity and a sense that the show is being looked after by someone who truly loves it.
What makes Keke Palmer the perfect host for this iteration of Password?
Keke is one of those rare performers who can turn anything into gold. You can give her notes on the contestants and celebrity players, and she has a talent for making everyone on stage shine. The chemistry between Keke and Jimmy is also important. Keke brings unpredictability and modern comedic relief, while Jimmy brings fandom and tradition. That combination makes the show feel both classic and current.
Are there any new twists or elements added to the game this season?
No major gameplay twists this season, as we feel we tackled that in Season 2 with the addition of “Shoot the Moon.” However, we’ve incorporated more integrated themed episodes in Season 3, merging Password with some of our biggest shows, which has been a major highlight of the season and a lot of fun!
How did you, or whoever did, come up with the “shoot the moon” concept, and why is it called that?
“Shoot the Moon” was introduced in Season 2 by then-showrunner John Quinn. When he was younger, he played a bridge-like card game with his mom, who would often shout that she was going to “shoot the moon” to try to double her points. It was a fun game mechanic, and John started saying it during run-throughs in Season 2—and it stuck!
Would you ever consider an all-celebrity version for charity?
Yes! We did an all-celebrity version in Season 1, and it was a lot of fun! The celebrities who join us want to do a good job, and helping charities that are dear to them is a great motivator. Hopefully, we’ll get another season and can do more.
Password has been rebooted numerous times. Why do you think this is a game show that people want to keep coming back to?
Password keeps getting rebooted because the format is simple, understandable, and easy for viewers to play along with at home. The game never gets old because the fun comes from the people playing — clever clues, funny mistakes, competitive moments, and, of course, the celebrity players. It also adapts to each new generation without losing what makes it special. This is a game show you can watch with your kids and your grandparents, and it’s just as fun for everyone.
Is there a celebrity who hasn’t been on the show yet who you’d really like to see participate?
Two celebrities who would crush the game, in my opinion, are Keegan-Michael Key—he’s such a talented improviser, I know his clues would be top-notch. Also, Jennifer Lawrence would be a total party on stage; whether she’s getting passwords correct or incorrect, it would be a fun time! Though I do think she’d be good at the game.
