THE DALLES — Nine of the 15 wrestlers who competed ended up placing for The Dalles High boys team, helping the Riverhawks finish sixth at the Feb. 1, 13-team Bank of Eastern Oregon Invitational at Heppner High School.
The Riverhawks had one individual champion in Alfred Brackenbury at 175 pounds, and two runners-up — Harley Scott at 138 and Creighton Clack at 144.
Brackenbury wrestled two matches to win his title. He beat Owen Guerra of Heppner High in the semifinals with a pin at the 5:38 mark. In the final, Brackenbury edged Eli Maley of Crane high, 1-0. Maley was a 2024 state tourney wrestler for the Mustangs.
Scott won his first two matches at 138 by fall and then beat Colton Akers of Irrigon, 22-6, in the semifinals. Carlos Fernandez of Culver beat Scott by a technical fall in the final. Fernandez was a 2A/1A state tourney wrestler last season.
Clack earned two wins by pin and another by a technical fall enroute to the championship at 144. In the title match, Noah Cory of Culver High won by fall over Clack.
The Dalles had four placers in the upper two weight classes. Richard Miller was fourth and Calvin Evans sixth at 215 pounds. Adrian Miramontes was fourth at 285 and teammate Eoin Herman was fifth.
Also winning at least one wrestled match in the tourney were: Amando Velador (sixth at 120); Gabe Phillips at 165; and Quinn Brenner (sixth at 165).
