THE GORGE — The Dalles High Riverhawks and the Hood River Valley High Eagles both competed in OSAA boys golf district tournaments May 12-13 with hopes of finishing near the top of the scoreboard to qualify for state tourneys May 19-20.
The five-member Riverhawks’ squad, guided by Coach Dan Telles, includes seniors Gabe Hoff and Leighton Voodre, who were both hoping to finish among the top-five individual golfers May 12 -13 at the 12-team 4A Special District 1 regional at Meadow Lakes Golf Course in Prineville. The duo was hoping to qualify for the state tourney May 19-20 at Tokatee Golf Club in McKenzie Bridge.
“It’s going to be tough for Gabe and Leighton to qualify for state, because there’s so many players in our regional who are all pretty good,” said Telles. “In order for them to qualify, they would both have to shoot personal best scores both days in the 70s range.”
Hoff’s goal was to reach state for the first time in his four-year career and Voodre had hopes of qualifying for the second time in his career. Voodre advanced to the 2023 state tourney with his Riverhawks teammates. Voodre’s season-best score is 79.
The Class 5A No. 5-ranked Eagles competed in the May 12 Northwest Oregon Conference (NWOC) regional tourney at Indian Creek Golf Course in Hood River. The Eagles were hoping to qualify for the state tourney for the first time since 2019. The top two squads qualify for the 5A state tourney May 19-20 at OGA Golf Course in Woodburn. The top five players who are not members of the top two qualifying teams will earn individual state tourney spots.
The Eagles’ squad is led by freshman Aksel Betz, who shot a career best 75 on April 29 in Prineville. Other members of the Eagle squad include senior Davis Kerr, who had hopes of qualifying for the fourth time in his career. John Olsen, David Shepherd, Ren Sandahl and Wyatt Bahn were also seeking to help the Eagles reach the state tourney.
The Dufur High Rangers girls golf team was hoping to enjoy some success in the 21-team OSAA Class 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 6 regional tournament May 12 and 13 at Quail Ridge Golf Course in Baker City. The top two teams qualify for the state tournament May 19-20 at Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis.
The Rangers’ squad, guided by Coach Travis Kane, is led by top 10-ranked golfer junior Tygh Timinsky, who has won the first-place medalist award in eight of 10 events this year. Timinsky shot a top score of 80 to come out on top of a 34-player field in a May 2 tourney at Buffalo Peak Golf Course in Union. Timinsky, whose season-best score is 74, was hoping to qualify for state for a third straight year.
“Our district is very competitive this year,” said Kane. “In my estimation, there are six to eight schools vying for the top two state qualifying spots.”
