THE DALLES — The Dalles High Riverhawks (8-5) won two-out-of-three OSAA (Oregon School Activities Association) Class 4A nonleague boys basketball home games last week.
The Riverhawks lost 83-68 Jan. 8 to the Pendleton High Buckaroos (4-8), which marked their most lopsided defeat of the season.
The Riverhawks led 33-31 at halftime but the Buckaroos came back with a strong second half to get the victory. The Buckaroos shot 72% from the field in the third quarter, outscoring the Riverhawks 30-10 to take a 63-41 advantage going into the fourth.
Led by junior Derek Goulart (career-high 30 points, 12 rebounds) and sophomore Oliver Stevens (19 points, nine rebounds), the Riverhawks trimmed the margin to nine points with three minutes left in the game. The Buckaroos sank numerous free throws in the final minutes to hold onto a double-digit lead at the end.
Junior Calder Morrison had a double-double for The Dalles with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Dalles followed the loss to Pendleton with a 53-50 home win against La Grande (2-10) on Jan. 10, and a 62-59 home win over Astoria (2-8) on Jan. 11.
The Riverhawks are seeking to capture a third straight nonleague win in Wednesday’s 6:30 p.m. road game against the Class 5A Mountain View High Cougars (7-6) in Bend. The Riverhawks begin their 10-game Tri-Valley Conference schedule Jan. 21 at 6:30 p.m. at home versus the Crook County High Cowboys (8-6).
