THE DALLES — The Dalles High Riverhawk boys and girls wrestling teams competed in two tournaments after the Christmas break. The Riverhawks entered a tournament Dec. 28 at McLoughlin High School in Milton-Freewater, followed by a Jan. 4 event at Sandy High School.
The Riverhawks were led by the tourney wins by Creighton Clack and freshman Kianna Dominguez. Clack won the boys 144-pound weight class with a 3-0 record in the Dec. 28 tourney at McLoughlin. Dominguez won the girls 105-pound weight division with a 3-0 record at the 20-team girls event at Sandy High School. She also won the McLoughlin tournament with a 4-0 record.
The Riverhawks’ eight-member girls squad scored 97 points to place seventh. Marie McCracken won three-of-four matches in the 125-pound class to finish second at Sandy.
Coach Barry Abrams said: “We had a really good showing by the girls; it was great seeing them score as high as they did. The boys squad didn’t do as well as we had expected, primarily because of injuries and illness to some of the guys who were unable to compete at Sandy.”
The eight-member Riverhawk boys squad took 11th place out of 15 teams with a total of 80 points at Sandy. Junior Harley Scott won three-out-of-five matches in the 138-pound weight class to get fourth place. Amado Velador won the 125-pound consolation bracket with a 3-1 record. Velador lost his first match and then won three consecutive matches.
The Riverhawks had an eight-member boys squad and four girls grapplers competing at McLoughlin High School. Freshman Adrian Miramontes won three-out-of-four matches to get third place in the heavyweight division to highlight the event for the Riverhawk grapplers.
Sophomore Sahalle Campos (105 pounds) won two-out-three matches to get fourth place at McLoughlin. Ivy Aguella (110 pounds) won two-of-three matches to get fourth place in her division. Sophomore Molly Proctor (115 pounds) won three-of-four matches to get third place in her weight class.
The Riverhawks will compete in their eighth meet of the season Jan. 13 in the Billy Richardson Invitiational home meet at 6 p.m. at The Dalles High School. The event will also consist of special Senior Night festivities to honor the seniors in the final home meet of the season.
