THE GORGE — Gorge-area small schools turned in some final tune-up performances at a couple of meets last week in preparation for the May 22-23 District 3 track and field championship at South Wasco High School in Maupin.
The district meet begins with field event finals at 11 a.m. on May 22. The 3000-meter finals begin at 1 p.m. followed by running preliminaries. The meet continues May 23 with more field event finals at noon; running event finals begin at 2 p.m.
A number of the District 3 schools gathered at South Wasco for the Small School Meet on May 13. Among them were the Redsides, who were led by the 1-2 finish of Storm McCoy and Coy Shirley in the boys javelin. Jason Hull won the boys 300 hurdles. South Wasco’s girls were led by Jayda Iverson, who was second in the 400, and Bailey Udey, who won the triple jump.
Horizon Christian was led by senior boys discus thrower Josiah Roberts, who won the discus in a PR (and school record) of 142 feet, 8.5 inches, and senior girls javelin thrower Evelyn Tomka, who won that event at 103-10. The Hawks also had a two-PR day from junior Landon Whitaker, who won the boys long jump at 19-2.5 and was second in the 110 hurdles at 16.96.
Sherman distance runner T’Sharra Lanthorn won the girls 800 in a PR 2:42.53, and Renan Christiansen was second in the boys shot put at 46-7.
The Trout Lake girls flexed a bit with nine event wins, including the 4x100 relay (Lupe Medina, Jade Mclean, Riley Rickman, and Cora Sharp), and the 4x400 relay (where Melody Stock replaced Rickman). Stock won the 3000 meter run, running alone in 10 minutes, 44.79 seconds (PR); Mclean cleared 9-6 in the pole vault; and Sharp won the 400 (PR 1:04.81). Senior Violette Anderson won the 100 hurdles in a PR 17.23, the high jump at 4-8, the shot put and triple jump.
The Mustang boys were led by Judah Pearson’s distance double of 2:09.28 (800) and 4:31.4 (1500). Jayden Kusky won the shot put at 49-2 and was second in the discus with a PR 124-7.5.
Glenwood’s Shane Spino swept the boys sprints: 12.05 100; 24.93 200; and 55.77 400. Teammate Giana Jackson was second in the girls 100 in a PR 13.71, and she leapt 14-0.25 in the long jump.
Ezekiel Marble won the boys 110-meter hurdles in a PR 16.39 for Lyle/Wishram and teammate Jack Thiemann bounded 39-9 in the boys triple jump.
Horizon, South Wasco, Lyle, and Sherman competed May 15 at Pilot Rock in the Rocket Invite. The Hawks were led by freshman Charlie Haynie, who won the 110-meter hurdles in a PR and school record 15.85 seconds and was second in the 200 at 24.10. He also ran a leg on Horizon’s winning 4x100 relay along with Whitaker, Tyler Abbott, and Judah Garrett. Abbott added a PR 54.63 400.
Roberts won the boys discus at 127-2, and Joseph Dutton was second in the boys triple jump at 39-2.5. Senior Caleb Caldwell won a tactical 1500, leading teammates Brayden Strong and Joshua Carley to a 1-2-3 finish, within two seconds of each other.
Horizon senior Hannah Adams had a two-PR day, winning the 100 hurdles in 15.92 (school record) and running the 100 in 13.68. She also was part of a competitive high jump, finishing second to South Wasco’s Macy Bell – 5-2 to 5-0. Horizon’s Bella Sperry was fourth at 4-8.
In addition to Bell, the Redsides also had quality efforts from Hull, who ran a PR in the 110 hurdles (17.64), George Barnett, who jumped 19-2 in the boys long jump, and McCoy with his 146-0 javelin throw. Iverson won the girls 800 in 2:34.38, and Jayden Chiccino threw a PR 101-10 in the girls javelin.
For Lyle, Marble was second in the boys high hurdles and 300 hurdles (43.77). Sherman was led by sophomore Arwen Dorzab, who was third in the quality girls high jump at 4-10 – a personal best. Christiansen added a PR in the boys shot put at 48-8.5.
Dufur competed May 16 at Regis High in Stayton, where 30 teams of various sizes gathered at a twilight meet. The Rangers were led by the personal best of 2:07.44 of Chase Richards in the boys 800, and fellow freshman Bryson Cates’ 39-0.5 boys shot put effort.
As she has all spring, Ranger freshman Ellie Brock had a busy day, with a quick double on the track — a 1:03.66 400 and 28.13 200. She also bounded a personal best 30-2.75 in the triple jump and 14-5.5 in the long jump.
