THE GORGE — The Sherman County boys basketball team earned the No. 4 seed in this week’s Class 1A boys state basketball playoffs and the Trout Lake girls are the No. 8 seed in the 1A girls bracket.
Sherman (21-5), the 2025 Big Sky district champion (see related story this issue), was scheduled to host one of 16 first-round games Feb. 26 against Pilot Rock/Ukiah (13-11). Trout Lake (18-4) was scheduled to host a girls first-round game Feb. 25 against Chiloquin (12-9) from Southern Oregon. The Mustangs finished second to South Wasco at last weekend’s district tourney in The Dalles.
The district champion South Wasco’s girls team (19-6) earned the 14th seed in the playoffs. The seedings are based on a number of factors, including regular season play and — essentially — strength of schedule. The Redsides open state tourney play Feb. 25 at home against Umpqua Valley Christian (17-8).
The South Wasco boys also host a first-round state playoff contest on Feb. 26. The 14th-seeded Redsides will play Southwest Christian (15-10) of Beaverton.
Dufur, the boys district runner-up, earned the eighth seed in the state playoffs. Like Sherman, the Rangers are guaranteed two first-round playoff games should they advance. Dufur (20-6) hosts Chiloquin (14-10) on Feb. 26.
The 1A girls second round is Feb. 28, and the boys second round is March 1. Second-round winners advance to the eight-team 1A state tourney, March 5-8 at Baker City High.
