THE GORGE — The Hood River Valley High (HRV) Eagle boys golf team capped a successful season by having three players compete in the OSAA Class 5A state tournament May 19-20 at OGA Golf Course in Woodburn.
The Eagles’ three-member squad included senior John Olsen and the freshman duo of Aksel Betz and David Shepherd. Olsen and Betz earned top-20 finishes out of the 62-player field. The Eagles didn’t have the standard four-player team score because they had three players who qualified individually.
Playing in the final tournament of his Hood River Valley High School career, Olsen shot a Day 1 score of 78, followed by a Day 2 score of 80 to finish tied for 15th place at 158 for 36 holes. Canby freshman Connor Holden shot even par 144 to earn medalist honors.
Betz shot 80-81 to finish in a three-way tie for 19th place. Shepherd finished in 35th place with a two-day 171.

Timinsky, a junior, shot 83-76 — 159. A total of 71 golfers competed in the tournament. It marked the second consecutive year that Timinsky recorded a top-10 finish; she was seventh in 2024. Columbia boys golf
Columbia High Bruin senior Garrett Kock competed in the WIAA Class 1A boys golf state tournament May 20-21 at Liberty Lake Golf Course, where he finished 21st out of 60 golfers. It was Kock’s first time competing in the state tourney.
“I am very happy and proud that we were able to have a golf season,” said Kock. “I owe a huge thank you to AJ Valencia, Colin Cieloha and Chad Myers for starting a team so I could fulfill my longtime goal of playing at the state golf championship tournament. My rounds were rather scrappy and certainly not my best. I am incredibly proud to have qualified for the tournament and to have made the cut after the first round.”
Kock shot 84-85 — 169. Zeke Prociw of Cascade Christian was the medalist with a 36-hole total of 141 (69, 72). Kock will continue playing golf next year on the men’s team at Whitman College in Walla Walla.
