WHITE SALMON — District runner-up Matthias Posini placed fifth for Columbia High at the 2025 Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) Mat Classic XXXVI boys state wrestling tournament Feb. 21-22 at the Tacoma Dome.
Posini won four of six wrestled matches at 285 pounds, including the Class 1A fifth-place match over Rowdie Tafoya of Tenino by fall. The Columbia High senior finished the season with a 32-7 record and scored 20.5 of the Bruins’ 26.5 team points at state.
He was one of five CHS wrestlers to qualify for the Mat Classic. Everett Coyner (third at district 165 pounds) lost both his matches and Giovanni Ruiz won one of his three matches at 126 pounds (six team points). Holden Uffelman (fourth at 157 at district) also lost both of his state matches, as did Razo Salazar at 215.
The Columbia boys finished 31st out of 39 1A schools with wrestlers who qualified for state.
The Columbia girls — specifically Eda O’Connor — scored 10 teams points and were 55th in the 1B/2B/1A division at state (out of 72 schools with wrestlers). O’Connor, who was district runner-up two weeks ago, won three of her five 110-pound matches at state for the Bruins’ team score.
Also competing at state for the CHS girls team were freshman Sage Lofgren at 145 pounds, and senior Caroline Meinzer at 155 pounds, who each lost two matches.
