THE DALLES — The No. 14-ranked The Dalles High Riverhawks finished the regular season with three straight wins and won a fourth time March 1 to qualify for the 16-team, Class 4A state boys basketball playoffs.
The Riverhawks’ March 1 win, 73-56, over Pendleton, came in the play-in round of the 2025 state playoffs. The contest was a rematch of an earlier Jan. 8 nonleague game that Pendleton won, 83-68, in The Dalles.
The Riverhawks (16-9) certainly got revenge against the Buckaroos (11-15) in the rematch. The victory propelled them into the state playoffs for the first time since 2023. The Riverhawks will play a first-round contest March 8 in the 16-team playoffs on the road versus the No. 5-ranked Greater Oregon League Champion Baker High Bulldogs (15-8). The winner will advance to the state tournament quarterfinals, March 13-15 at Forest Grove High School.
Against Pendleton, The Dalles built a 20-15 lead after the first quarter, and they extended their advantage to 31-23 at halftime. After the Buckaroos trimmed the margin to 38-33, an 8-0 Riverhawk rally made it 46-33, forcing a Pendleton timeout with 3:00 left in the quarter. The Riverhawks extended their lead to the largest of the game at 57-37 after three quarters. A breakaway dunk by Derek Goulart (11 points) and a buzzer-beating jumper in the lane by Trey Hodges helped the Riverhawks build the 20-point lead. The Riverhawks won their final Tri-Valley Conference game (TVC), 62-48, at home on senior night, Feb. 25, over the Molalla High Indians (3-7 TVC, 9-14 overall) to finish the regular season with a 6-4 league mark and 16-9 overall.
The Riverhawk senior duo of Vince Ziegenhagen (six points) and Hodges (five points) were honored in a special pregame ceremony while they were accompanied by their parents and family members. Ziegenhagen and Hodges were also in the starting lineup for Coach Brian Stevens to honor them for their contributions to the Riverhawk basketball program.
Led by Morrison (career-high 28 points), the Riverhawks jumped out to a 22-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Morrison scored 17 points in the quarter, including five 3-point field goals to help the Riverhawks build the double-digit advantage.
