THE DALLES — The Dalles High Riverhawks’ 16-member boys and girls swim team competed in its ninth OSAA Class 4A Special District 1 swim meet of the season Feb. 1 at the 10-team Madras Invitational at Madras Aquatic Center.
Last Saturday’s meet was the final regular season event for The Dalles swim team. The Riverhawks, guided by Coach Pat Shortt and assistant coaches Nate Timmons and Shae Macnab, had a number of athletes who recorded personal best finishes.
“We have been pushing the kids super hard of the past two weeks and they’re physically tired,” said Timmons. “To see swimmers continue to drop time is pretty amazing. Once we finish our taper, I think these swimmers are going to do really well at the district meet.”
The Dalles’ first-year swimmers Adele Black, Alaina Casady, Riley Elliot and Vicky Gonzalez competed for the first time in the girls medley relay and posted a time of 2 minutes, 43.11 seconds for a fourth-place finish. Gonzalez also swam to a personal best time of 34.78 seconds in the 50 free.
The Dalles junior Laura Black continued her steady time drop this season in the 100 free, as she swam 1:27.00, a two-second personal record. In the girls 200 free, senior Rowena Benjamin (2:36.05) and sophomore Lillen Vaught (2:25.00) each recorded personal best times. Benjamin also dropped eight seconds in the 500 free (7:08.59) and Casady swam to a personal best of 7:57.49.
In the boys 100 free, junior Cruz Peral swam to a personal best time of 1:05.42. Junior Everest Lenardson had a two-second personal best in the boys 200 of 2:04.68.
The Riverhawks will compete in the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A District 1 meet Feb. 14-15 at Madras. Swimmers can qualify for the OSAA state meet Feb. 21-22 at the Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center in Beaverton.
