HOOD RIVER — Natalia Solorio Campos continued her stellar senior girls wrestling season, this time in front of a hometown crowd, with her second-place finish at the Jan. 25 Hood River Valley Girls Invitational.
The HRV Invitational attracted numerous competitive prep programs from Oregon and Washington and most weight brackets had multiple returning state tourney wrestlers.
HRV finished 15th in the 33-team field, as Solorio Campos scored 23 of the Eagles’ 63.5 points. Kelso High School won the tournament with 236 points.
Solorio won by a major decision and two falls to advance to the final at 190 pounds, which featured two returning state tourney wrestlers. Maddie Armstrong of team runner-up La Grande High School won by fall over Solorio Campos at 5:12 of the final. Armstrong, a junior, was third in the 2024 Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state tourney at 170 pounds; Solorio Campos won two matches in the 6A/5A state tourney a year ago.
Kyra Mitchell placed sixth (14 points) for Hood River Valley at 130 pounds. She posted a 3-2 record at the tourney, winning her first two matches before losing in the quarterfinals to Amerie Medina of Hillsboro, 11-6. Mitchell won by fall in her first consolation match before losing in the 5th place match.
At 155 pounds, Valeria Solorio Campos placed seventh with two wins in four wrestled matches. She placed 7th and scored 9.5 team points. Solorio Campos lost in the quarterfinals to Hillsboro’s Danica Kirkwood, a state meet wrestler a season ago. Hailie Ballou of Nyssa High beat Solorio Campos, 8-2, in the consolation round No. 3. (Ballou also competed at state in 2024.) Solorio Campos rebounded to win the 7th place match by technical fall over Jordan Dunkerson of Centennial High School, 16-0.
Xiomara Gordian Gomez scored seven team points and won three matches at 145 pounds. Her lone loss came to the eventual champion, MacKenzie Shearon of Redmond, in the second round. Shearon finished third in the 2024 6A/5A state tourney.
Also scoring team points for HRV were Ayleen Marquez at 105 pounds. She won two matches before losing by a 15-12 decision to Reyna Miranda of Nyssa. At 110 pounds, Christeen DeHart won one of two wrestled matches. Teammate Charley Beam scored four points for the Eagles at 125 pounds, winning one of three wrestled matches. Her first-round loss came against St. Helens’ Annaliese Steele, who was a state tourney competitor in 2024.
Xiomara Gordian Gomez scored seven team points and won three matches at 145 pounds. Her lone loss came to the eventual champion, MacKenzie Shearon of Redmond, in the second round.
Also competing in the tourney were Melissa Jara Vela at 105 pounds and Madison Rae at 110 pounds.
