HOOD RIVER — The Hood River Valley (HRV) softball team spent part of their spring break in Madras for the Lady Buff Classic on March 24-25. Hood River played four games in two days and came away with three wins. The Eagles are coached by Madelynn Vallejo who led her team to victories over McKay (0-4 overall), Crook County (3-1) and La Pine (0-6). Their lone loss came at the hands of Class 5A Ridgeview Ravens (5-0) in the second game of Monday’s doubleheader.
HRV kicked things off with a three-inning, 28-0 win over Class 5A McKay High on March 24. It was the Eagles’ first shutout of the season.
Hood River had a season-high 20 hits by 10 different batters. Senior Grace Rowan went 4-for-4 from the plate (two doubles and a triple). Freshman Honey Wampler-Bryan hit her first career home run. Kenadie Lucas pitched three innings and struck out seven.
Offense was hard to find in HRV’s loss to No. 3-ranked Ridgeview. The Eagles scored their only runs on a two-run home run from freshman Honey Wampler-Bryan — the second of her career.
The Eagle offense continued to cook on offense the next day with a combined 31 runs scored against 4A Crook County and 3A La Pine. Up first at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Hood River took down Crook County Cowgirls 12-5. Bryan-Wampler, Rowan and Lucas all hit home runs.
The Eagles concluded their trip with a 19-3 win over the winless La Pine Hawks of the Mountain Valley Conference. Once again, it was Rowan who hit her third home run of the trip and sent the Eagles home with a 19-3 win over the Hawks.
HRV returns from spring break with three games, including a doubleheader versus Mountain View on April 4 in Hood River. First they will travel to Pendleton on April 2 for a matchup against the undefeated Buckaroos. Pendleton is outscoring opponents 85-6 on the season.
The Eagles open conference play against the Parkrose Broncos on April 15 in Gresham.
