HOOD RIVER — The Hood River Valley (HRV) softball team rose to No. 2 in the Class 5A rankings over the weekend.
The Eagles, under the tutelage of third-year Coach Madelynn Vallejo, swept a doubleheader versus the visiting Mountain View Cougars on April 4, after losing April 2 at No. 1-ranked, Class 4A Pendleton High, 4-1.
Reigning 4A state champion Pendleton (8-0 overall) has only allowed seven runs in eight games this season, and Buckaroo senior pitcher Kendall Murphy is a big reason for that. She pitched seven innings and struck out 15 HRV batters, allowing just one run. That came on a seventh-inning, sacrifice fly from sophomore Bella Belcher. She drove in senior Grace Rowan, who had reached base on a Buckaroo error.
The second loss this season for Hood River (6-2 overall) set up the doubleheader two days later against Class 5A Mountain View High of Bend. The Eagles bounced back from the loss in emphatic fashion.
The opener lasted just three innings as HRV scored four runs in the first inning and 13 in the second to post a 17-1 win. Junior Kenadie Lucas started on the mound and allowed two hits and recorded three strikeouts. Hood River is 4-0 this season when it scores 12 or more runs.
Belcher joined the home run club in the second inning and recorded three RBIs. Rowan also smashed a home run and drove in six HRV runs.
The second game was closer but still ended in a 7-4 HRV victory. Rowan pitched seven innings and recorded a season-high 11 strikeouts. Belcher and Rowan homered in the fifth inning and pushed the score to 6-0. Mountain View (3-3) would claw back into the game, but it was too little, too late. Rowan struck out two in the seventh inning to end the game and give HRV its sixth win of the season.
Hood River is scheduled to play two nonleague games — vs. visiting Corvallis (1-7) on April 8 and at The Dalles (1-4) on April 10. The Eagles will begin their 16-game Northwest Oregon Conference (NWOC) schedule on April 15 when they travel to Parkrose High.
