THE DALLES — The Hattenhauer Distributing Columbia Gorge Hustlers age 17-and-under squad extended their win streak to eight after winning five summer league baseball games last week.
The Hustlers (13-6 record at week’s end) started their undefeated week with a sweep of a June 23 home doubleheader over the Hillsboro Spartans’ 18-and-under squad. In Game 1, the Hustlers recorded a 10-0 victory in a match-up shortened to five innings via the 10-run mercy rule. Hood River Valley (HRV) High sophomore Landon Pratt tossed a no-hitter, striking out eight and walking two.
The Hustlers pounded 15 hits in the lopsided contest and they were led offensively by Pratt (3-for-4, two RBI), The Dalles High sophomore Gunner Bustos (3-for-3, two RBI), Wyatt Bolton (1-for-1, two RBI) of Goldendale High School and Columbia High sophomore Cameron Collins (2-for-2, two RBI).
In Game 2, the Hustlers won 13-3 in five innings. A trio of Hustler pitchers — Bustos, Evan Ortega and Bolton — combined for five strikeouts, four walks and eight hits allowed. The Hustlers had nine hits and were led offensively by The Dalles High duo of sophomore Kale Beardmore (2-for-3, three RBI) and senior Evan Ortega (1-for-3, two RBI). HRV sophomore Tysen Baker (1-for-4, two RBI), Sherman High junior Drake Dark (2-for-2, RBI) and Pratt (1-for-3, RBI) also had solid hitting performances.
The Hustlers then continued to display their impressive strong offense in a 10-3 home win June 24 over the Hermiston Bulldogs. Both squads had nine hits, and the Hustlers’ offense was led by Evan Ortega (1-for-3, RBI), Bustos (3-for-4, two RBI), Collins (2-for-3, two RBI) and HRV sophomore Lincoln McAdam (1-for-2, RBI). A group of five Hustler pitchers — Beardmore, Dark, Baker, freshman Joel Ortega and HRV senior Chaz Valentine — combined for 14 strikeouts and one walk in the nine-inning contest.
The Hustlers had another double-digit offensive display in a five-inning, 14-4 win, on June 27 over Corvallis in the first game of a tournament at Philomath High School. Leading 7-4 after three innings, the Hustlers took control of the game by scoring seven runs in the fourth to build a 14-4 advantage.
The Hustlers outhit Corvallis, 10-3, and they were led offensively by Pratt (2-for-4, two RBI), Baker (3-for-4, three RBI), Bustos (1-for-4, RBI), Beardmore (1-for-2, RBI) and Chase Peterson (RBI). The duo of starting pitcher Evan Ortega and relief pitcher Pratt combined on a three-hitter with seven strikeouts and six walks.
The Hustlers won two more games on June 28 in Philomath, including a 13-2 win over the South Albany Red Hawks in their first game of a doubleheader. The Hustlers outhit the Red Hawks, 9-7, and they took control of the five-inning contest while building a 10-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning.
The Hustlers were led offensively by Peterson (2-for-2, RBI), Bolton (2-for-2, two RBI), Cannon Stocks (2-for-2, three RBI), Baker (1-for-2), Dark (1-for-1, RBI) and Bustos (1-for-1, RBI). The pitching trio of Dark and relievers Beardmore and Valentine combined to record five strikeouts, and two earned runs allowed.
In their second contest on Saturday evening, the Hustlers extended their win streak to eight with a 4-1 victory over the Fightin’ Jays. Pratt (13 strikeouts) and Bustos (four strikeouts) combined on the mound to toss a two-hitter. Pratt was one of five players who recorded a hit as he batted two-for-three with a walk and one run scored. Baker (1-for-3, RBI), Bustos (1-for-3, two RBI), Bolton (RBI), Valentine (1-for-3) and Sawyer Case (1-for-2) also contributed to the Hustler’s offense.
The Hustlers continue their schedule this week in a tournament July 3-6 in West Linn. The Hustlers play their next home game on July 10 with a 5 p.m. doubleheader versus Pendleton.
